I read with great amusement Minister Noel Dempsey's and Shell's sentiments stressing the importance of the Corrib gas to the Irish nation.

The Minister of State at the Department of Public Enterprise, Joe Jacob, made the following contribution to the Dail debate on the Gas Interim Bill 2000 in February 2002: “Deputy Sargent pointed to suggestions that the Corrib gas should be kept in the ground until a later date. However, the reality is that the gas now belongs to those companies which invested in the exploration and they are entitled to it and to sell it as they see fit.”

At the An Bord Pleanala Oral Hearing dealing with the application to build the Corrib gas refinery, in 2002, Shell went on record stating that “EEI (Shell) had signed a gas sales contract with Bord Gais under which a minimum of 60 per cent f its (Shell) share of the Corrib gas will be sold through Bord Gas.

“We, as Enterprise, (Shell) have no knowledge as to how and where our partners (Statoil and Marathon) have been marketing their gas.”

I don't know who bought the gas and where it will be used.

Well, I believe and trust Minister Jacob who got it right for once: ” . . . they are entitled to it and to sell it as they see fit.”

After all, that is the business oil companies engage in. MONICA MULLER, ROSSPORT, BALLINA, CO MAYO
