NIGERIA‘Shell must stay out of our oil’ – Nigerian militants

Lagos – Nigerian militants on Thursday warned Anglo-Dutch oil giant Shell against resuming operations in areas where it has shut production in the restive Niger Delta region. The warning followed reports that the company plans to resume production within a few weeks.

“They are welcome to test our resolve, but we promise you they will pay a hefty price for their foolishness,” the Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta (Mend), said on Thursday.

The militants also denied engaging in any reconciliatory talks with Shell.

By March, Shell and its Nigerian joint venture subsidiaries were losing 500 000 barrels of oil per day, following attacks by the militants against the company's platforms in Niger Delta.

Shell Petroleum Development Company (SPDC) is the largest oil-producing company in Nigeria, Africa's largest oil producer at 2.5 million barrels per day.

Shell's head of exploration and production, Malcolm Brinded, told shareholders at the company's annual general meeting in Scheveningen, near The Hague, on Tuesday, that SPDC had started the process of resuming production in Nigeria and had started negotiating with communities to pave the way for the resumption.

Mend, which is seeking a larger slice of the oil resources from the Niger Delta, has promised to step up attacks against oil workers, facilities and some political leaders from the area as part of its campaign, which has involved the kidnapping of foreign oil workers. -panapress
