UPI: Russia’s Molikpaq platform working again

MOSCOW, June 14 (UPI) — Russia’s Pacific offshore oil platform Molikpaq has returned to duty and begun the summer oil extraction season, ITAR-TASS reported Wednesday.

Molikpaq, which is owned by Sakhalin Energy, was out of operation during the winter months, as its location in the Sea of Okhotsk means that operators must first wait for the sea to become free of ice before lifting the floating berth from the sea bed and docking the Okha supertanker, which is used for storage during the season.

Since 1999, the Molikpaq platform has produced approximately 10 million tons, or 70 million barrels, of oil. This season it is expected to produce 12 million barrels of crude. The oil from Molikpaq is exported to the Asia-Pacific region and the United States.

The Sakhalin shelf is the focus of oil investment and development.

The Yastreb platform is a coastal drilling and oil production platform extracting hydrocarbon fuel on the Sakhalin shelf. The platform is linked to oil deposits under the sea bed at Okhotsk by 10 inclined wells.

The Orlan sea platform is expected to begin operating this year. With it online, the five sea platforms on the Sakhalin shelf are expected to produce 2 million tons of oil per year from 2007.
