Energy giant Shell Oil Co. USA plan to build a $200-million (A157.3-million) wind farm on the slopes of a 20,000-acre (8,000-hectare) ranch on the island of Maui.

Hawaii Gov. Linda Lingle and John Hofmeister, president of Shell Oil Co. USA, announced the project Friday at the capitol, alongside Sumner Erdman, president of Ulupalakua Ranch, Inc.

Erdman said his ranch, which has been in operation for more than 100 years, had been looking for such an arrangement for six years as a means of branching out from agriculture.

The wind farm’s first phase is expected to be completed in 2008 with 20 turbines producing up to 40 megawatts of power. The plan is to then double the site’s output with the completion of a second phase, which would use water pumped up hill during off-peak hours and later released downhill to turn turbines and help generate power during peak demand hours.

According to the company, nearly 20 percent of the island’s power will come from wind turbines once the project is complete.

Lingle called the plan a major step toward the statewide goal of having 20 percent of Hawaii’s energy coming from renewable sources by 2020.
