Militants from the Gbaran Community in Southern Ijaw Local Government area of Bayelsa State, yesterday released the expatriate oil worker kidnapped last week.
The expatriate, Muchal Loss from Holand was released to President of the Ijaw Youth Council (IYC) Mr John John.
Loss, who was later handed over to Bayelsa State Deputy Governor, Peremobowei Ebebi, was working on a project owned by the Shell Petroleum Development Company (SPDC), when he was kidnapped.
Ebebi refused to speak on the issue. Sources said government wanted to play down the issue as much as possible and not give it unnecessary publicity.
Soon after the released Dutch man was handed over to the government of Bayelsa State, he was whisked away by officials of the Netherlands High Commission.
Loss was kidnapped by armed men last Thursday morning from a Royal Dutch Shell gas plant, in the most recent spate of hostage-taking in the Niger Delta.
The kidnappers arrived at the Shell plant in speedboats and took Loss, an expatriate working for Westminster Dredging, a contractor to Royal Dutch Shell Plc. The plant is located outside of Yenagoa, the state capital.
