A contract for a proposed Motiva refinery expansion in Port Arthur has been awarded to Bechtel Corp. and Jacobs Engineering Group Inc., Motiva officials announced Thursday.

When completed, the project will make the refinery the country’s largest, according to a news release from the Houston-based Motiva.

Under the contract, Bechtel and Jacobs will provide engineering, procurement and construction for a proposed expansion that will produce 325,000 barrels per day at Motiva, which Saudi Refining Inc. and Shell Oil Co. jointly owns, Motiva officials said in a news release.

Motiva’s current capacity is 275,000 barrels, according to Enterprise archives. ExxonMobil Corp.’s Baytown refinery currently is the nation’s largest producer, at 557,000 per day.

“We are delighted to have been selected by Motiva to design and build this important expansion in the refining capacity of the United States,” Bill Dudley, Bechtel Oil, Gas and Chemicals president, said in the news release. “The project is of major importance to all stakeholders – industry as well as community.

“Its impact will be far-reaching, and we are committed to building a safe, reliable state-of-the-art facility.”

Pete Evans, Jacobs vice president, said, “We are pleased about the opportunity to provide Motiva the proven resources of our two organizations to execute one of the largest refinery expansions ever undertaken in North America. Our established working relationship and knowledge of the Port Arthur refinery enables us to develop programs and approaches that are tailored to the unique aspects of this project. We look forward to continuing to be part of the Port Arthur community.”

Motiva owns and operates facilities capable of refining about 780,000 barrels daily, according to http://motivaenterprises.com.

Since its founding in 1898, Bechtel has completed more than 22,000 projects in 140 countries.

Jacobs, with more than 40,000 employees and revenues approaching $7 billion, provides scientific, technical, professional and construction services globally.

In April, Motiva said that pending required regulatory approvals, the expansion would be in its final engineering stage late this year, with construction beginning in 2007. The expansion would come online in 2010.
