ShellNews.net: New Royal Dutch Shell Chairman Jorma Ollila: The Challenge of Shell

By John Donovan

The Wikipedia extract below is from an article about Mr Jorma Ollila, who, perhaps as a punishement for past sins (we are all sinners), was appointed as the non-executive Chairman of Royal Dutch Shell Plc . He took up his new role on 1st June 2006. He is indeed faced with a very considerable challenge.  I will send him a few words of encouragement next week. It must have been a shock to discover that Shell does not even own the dotcom domain name for Royal Dutch Shell Plc although the company is ranked No 3 in the Fortune 500 and has a market value of almost $250 BILLION.  At least Mr Ollila is not tainted by the reserves fraud.

It is interesting to note that in June 2006 Mr Ollila participated in the annual, ultra-secretive Bilderberg conference in which the world’s political elite, royalty, top thinkers and most powerful business executives discuss issues of global importance.  The meeting took place under heavy security to keep protestors and curious onlookers at bay.  Conspiracy theorists who follow the group accuse it of plotting world domination at its annual gatherings. Skeptic Daniel Estulin, who flew from Spain to try to cover the conference, said their intent is to “create a world government ruled by an elite group of people whose main objective is to control all the natural resources on the planet.” Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands, whose family is reportedly the largest shareholder in Royal Dutch Shell Plc, was also at the conference.  The information relating to the Bilderberg Conference comes from the following report: –

EXTRACT FROM THE WIKIPEDIA ARTICLE ABOUT JORMA OLLILA

The Challenge of Shell

Ollila will be the first non Dutch / non Brit to be Chairman of Shell and he will be the first Chairman chosen to head up this multinational corporation in its new corporate form of Royal Dutch Shell. Whilst in the past both of Shell’s “parent” companies (Royal Dutch and “Shell” Transport and Trading) have had non executive directors (often very distinguished ones) none of them has become very involved in the day to day running of Shell’s huge business.

It has been suggested that this has been a contributory factor in some of Shell’s business failures and reputational problems. Ollila has been appointed following a nine month long search to find the right person and it is clear that he will be expected to be fairly hands on.

It is reported that he will spend two to three days a week on his Shell duties which suggests that he will be quite intimately involved in the detail of both Shell’s recovery from its problems and in the development of a new direction for this much troubled corporation.
