unison.ie: Protestors prevent resumption of work at Corrib site

13:48 Tuesday September 26th 2006

Up to 100 protestors have blocked the entrance to the site of the proposed Corrib gas terminal in Co Mayo this morning.

The demonstrators prevented a group of construction workers from entering the land at Bellanaboy to resume work on the controversial facility.

Despite requests from Gardai, they refused to budge and the employees were eventually advised to leave.

Work on the Corrib terminal was due to restart this morning after being held up for a year due to the ongoing dispute over the pipeline bringing gas onshore from the Corrib field.

One of this morning’s protestors was Willie Corduff, a member of the Rossport Five group that spent more than 90 days in prison last year for refusing to give an undertaking that they would not obstruct the project.

He said today that he was determined “to save my family and my community and that’s what I’m going to keep doing”. “We’ll be here until they’re gone for good,” he added.

Shell Ireland, meanwhile, says it is determined to press ahead with the construction of the €200m terminal and has taken every reasonable step to address the local concerns.

Spokesman Christy Loftus said the company was legally entitled to carry out the construction work and would try to get on site again as soon as possible despite today’s setback.
