Itar-Tass: Sakhalin Energy Co charters two giant oil tankers

YUZHNO-SAKHALINSK, September 27 (Itar-Tass) – The Sakhalin Energy Company (operator of the Sakhalin-2 project) has chartered on Wednesday two giant tankers of the Primorye Shipping Company to ship the petroleum obtained on the Sakhalin shelf. A corresponding agreement was signed at the international “Sakhalin Oil and Gas–2006” conference, which is currently under way here.

The “Ostrov Sakhalin” and “Gubernator Farkhutdinov” tankers with a deadweight of 100,000 tons each will be used to ship petroleum from the Prigorodnoye settlement area on the southern part of Sakhalin.

The annual oil output on Sakhalin can be expected to top fifteen million tons after the commissioning of the five shelf platforms, installed in keeping with the “Sakhalin-1” and “Sakhalin-2” projects.

The tanker “Viktor Titov” of the aforesaid company has already arrived to take on board the first “Sakhalin-1” export petroleum. The “Exxon Neftegaz”, which is the project’s operator, reports that the testing of the tankers loading systems was all but completed in the port of De Kastri in Khabarovsk Territory, whence the Sakhalin-1 project’s petroleum will be shipped. Starting from 1999, the “Primorye” taker with a deadweight of 105,000 tons was used to ship the petroleum, extracted by the Sakhalin Energy Company. Four giant tankers of the Primorye Shipping Company are now being used at the Sakhalin shelf projects.

The Primorye Company is also planning to take part in gas shipments from Sakhalin and has ordered for this purpose a giant gas tanker capable of carrying 144,000 cubic metres of gas.

Sakhalin may grow to be the principal supplier of oil and gas to the Asia-Pacific Region already in 2008. A liquefied gas plant is being built on the island with an output capacity of 9.6 million tons a year. Japan, USA, and the Republic of Korea have bought it up in advance for the next twenty years.

The “Oil. Gas. Infrastructure” exhibition, now on view here, reflects the history of the region’s development. Taking part in it are more than sixty companies of the Russian Federation, the United States, Sweden, and Britain. Regional Governor Ivan Malakhov believes Sakhalin is growing to be an oil and gas centre of the Russian Far East.
