WASHINGTON (Reuters) – Units of Royal Dutch Shell Plc. and BP Plc. will pay a combined $1.5 million (800,000 pounds) to settle charges that they violated U.S. gasoline standards, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency said on Thursday.

The government alleged that the firms produced and distributed gasoline that failed to meet U.S. standards set by the Clean Air Act, which was a significant threat to public health, the EPA said in a press release.

The standards are meant to reduce vehicle emissions of air pollutants like smog and carbon monoxide.

BP will pay a civil penalty of $900,000 and Shell will pay $600,000, the EPA said. Shell’s case involved subsidiaries Equilon Enterprises LLC and Motiva Enterprises LLC, Shell’s joint venture with Saudi Refining.

The alleged violations occurred between 1999 and 2004 at retail outlets, distribution terminals and refineries, the EPA said.
