Canberra Times: Fuel by special delivery

Published: Jan 04, 2007

Shell’s V-Power petrol will be a premium commodity at Summernats this year after trouble struck the company’s Sydney refinery this week.

There has been a shortage of V-Power, the unleaded premium petrol formerly known as Optimax, across parts of both the ACT and NSW.

A Shell spokeswoman said yesterday a special delivery of V-Power petrol had been made to four stations near EPIC to accommodate the requirements of motoring enthusiasts.

Summernats 20 organiser Chic Henry said the northern suburbs had been given a top priority because of the high-octane event.

Mr Henry said he had spoken to a nearby petrol station owner who was confident there would be enough premium petrol to last the distance at the event.

”We have been given priority in Australia, and we were very pleased to hear that,” he said.

The Shell spokeswoman said the problem at the refinery began after a routine maintenance, and several days of production were lost.

Production in Geelong was increased to help meet demands.

She said production of V-Power was again under way and supply should return to normal in the coming days.

Shell has posted apologies to customers on its website and at affected petrol stations in both the ACT and NSW.
