BusinessWorld (Philippines): Off-road drivers support Malampaya Foundation’s humanitarian mission

Published: Jan 19, 2007

Off-road drivers put their skills to good use when they volunteered for the Operation Tabangan humanitarian mission spearheaded by the Malampaya Foundation to bring relief goods to remote areas in typhoon- ravaged Bicol.

The mission was backed by a P5-million donation from Malampaya joint- venture partners Shell Philippines Exploration, Chevron and Philippine National Oil Co.-Exploration Corp. (PNOC-EC), in response to Energy Secretary Raphael P.M. Lotilla’s call on energy entities to help areas affected by the recent spate of typhoons.

Volunteers from several off-roader clubs headed a convoy of more than a dozen vehicles composed of 18-footer trucks, 4×4 jeeps and 6×6 mini- trucks carrying food and water.

The trucks stayed in a warehouse compound in Bicol while the smaller vehicles made their daily journeys to isolated villages.

Members of the Youth with a Mission group, Tanay Off-roaders Club, Naga Off-roaders Club, and Rovers Club joined forces with Naga indigenous people volunteers. The relief operations lasted for four days.

Malampaya Foundation staff Teddy Bolivar, who supervised the mission on the ground, said, “What the people need urgently are basic materials to repair damaged homes. Nonetheless, the people were thankful as we were the only nongovernmental organization to reach their far-flung areas.”

The Shell Companies in the Philippines will also help build homes through a partnership with Gawad Kalinga. The donation will include seed money for livelihood and microfinance.
