A WOMAN who sued two North Sea oil giants for pounds 800,000 over her husband-to-be’s death has settled out of court.
Jacqueline Ogilivie took on Shell and services firm Wood Group after a gas leak on an oilrig killed her partner, Keith Moncrieff.
Up to 2.5 tons of gas suffocated the Wood Group technician, 45, and colleague Sean McCue, 22, while they inspected a leaking pipe on Shell’s Brent Bravo platform.
It later emerged a temporary patch had been placed on the leak for nearly a year before the tragedy in September 2003.
Jacqueline, 50, of Dundee, had accused Shell of negligence that led to financial losses for her and her two daughters.
Yesterday, solicitor George Clark, who represented her, said: “The case has settled for a substantial and undisclosed sum.
“Mrs Ogilvie is delighted the matter is at an end after almost four years of constant pain and reminder of the tragic incident.
“She can now move on with the rest of her life but at the same time always cherish the memory of Keith.”
Shell were fined pounds 900,000 in 2005 for three health and safety breaches relating to the deaths of Keith, of Invergowrie, Dundee, and Sean, of Kennoway, Fife.
Shell later said they felt “100 per cent responsible”.
Aberdeen-based Wood Group confirmed the settlement. Shell declined to comment.
Jake Molloy, of the OILC union, said: “It has been a traumatic four years for Mrs Ogilvie. She has suffered greatly, losing the man she was to marry in tragic circumstances.”
