Bloomberg: Shell Singapore Ethylene Unit Is on Target for 2009-2010 Start

By Trisha Huang

March 23 (Bloomberg) — Royal Shell Dutch Plc, Europe’s largest oil company, said its ethylene and mono-ethylene glycol plants in Singapore are on schedule for operation in 2009 or 2010.

The first piles were driven into the ground on Pulau Bukom and Jurong Island, the company’s chemical unit said in a statement today.

The Shell Eastern Petrochemicals Complex, which will have a cracker with a capacity to make 800,000 metric tons of ethylene from naphtha and other petroleum products, is Shell’s biggest chemical investment in Singapore, the company said. Construction of the plants started in October.

The complex will include a 750,000 tons-a-year mono- ethylene glycol plant. Mono-ethylene glycol is a key ingredient in plastic water bottles, synthetic fibers, and anti-freeze.

The cracker will be Singapore’s fourth ethylene plant. Exxon Mobil Corp., the world’s largest investor-owned oil company, operates a cracker that can make over 900,000 tons of ethylene a year.

Petrochemical Corp. of Singapore Pte, half owned by Shell, is the only other ethylene producer in Singapore. Petrochemical Corp. operates two crackers with combined annual ethylene capacities of 1.08 million tons.
