April 4 (Bloomberg) — Royal Dutch Shell Plc’s 420,000- barrel-a-day Pernis refinery in Rotterdam had to shut down several units earlier today because of a power outage, a spokesman said.
“There was a power outage at 2 a.m. and some units went off line,” Shell spokesman Wim van de Wiel said by phone from The Hague today. The units have already returned to full capacity, said Van de Wiel.
The Pernis refinery is Europe’s largest. Shell, the biggest oil company in Europe by market value, suffered a power outage at Pernis in July 2005 that forced the company to curb production there for four days.
The Environmental Protection Agency Rijnmond and local police are investigating a possible connection between the shutdown and particles of white dust that appeared near the refinery, said DCMR spokeswoman Marieke Schoneveld by phone from Schiedam, Netherlands.
“There is a possibility the shutdown and the white dust are connected,” Shell’s Wim van de Wiel said.
