The Mirror: Gardai foil shell gas rally

MIRROR REPORTER,
Published: Apr 14, 2007

PROTESTERS were foiled yesterday in their attempts to chain themselves to lorries at the Shell gas refinery site.

Skirmishes involving gardai and demonstrators marked an otherwise peaceful day at the Bel-lanaboy plant in Co Mayo.

Around 10 women – some from the area, others bussed in from Dublin and Cork -managed to briefly gain access to the secured site.

All were removed without any arrests or violent scenes that have marred previous confrontations at the oil giant’s contentious operation.

When some tried to obstruct traffic at one of the main gates they were restrained by gardai.

Some of the Shell to Sea campaigners later complained about injuries.
