Convenience Store Decisions: Activists Assail Circle K Over Magazines

By CSD Staff

Group protests sale of pornography in area stores.

A Shell-branded Circle K store is on the wrong side of an activist group’s wrath after the marketer issued a statement categorizing magazines Playboy and Penthouse as “Adult Sophisticates” as opposed to pornography.

This statement came days after the Florida Family Association, a pro-family activist group, demanded that the Circle K stores (which carries Shell-branded fuels) discontinue selling the publications, according to WorldNetDaily.com.

This isn’t the first time the Florida Family Association has addressed the issue of pornography in c-stores–the same request has been made to over a dozen other oil companies, all of which complied. Shell is the first to decline.

The group claims on their website that a Shell executive responded to their email by telling them that the two magazines in question were no longer considered pornography. However, Shell argues that this is not the case.

“Shell prohibits the sale of sexually explicit magazines, including adult sophisticates, at Shell stations that we own in the United States,” said the statement from Anne Peebles, of the company’s U.S. Media Center, according to WorldNetDaily.com.

The statement went on to say that while Shell Oil does not support the sale of these products in its own stores, the company has no say about what goes on in the c-stores that simply brand their gasoline.

“The convenience component of the sites are owned, operated and branded by Circle K, one of our wholesalers. We have been in contact with Circle K on this issue and have shared the community’s concerns with them.”
