Irish Independent: Tempers flare between locals and Shell

Published: Apr 21, 2007

SHELL have been accused of “insulting the intelligence” of local people in Mayo.

Locals near the Bellaghaboy site were reacting after Shell E&P Ireland (SEPIL) held a series of formal meetings regarding the decision to cold-vent the offsore gas rather than flare it.

On the fifth day of the Environmental Protection Agency’s oral hearing into the issuing of an Integrated Pollution Prevention Licence, Agnes McLaverty of SEPIL said the company had chosen cold-venting to ease residents’ concerns over the visual impact. The cold-venting of gas, usually methane, entails it being released directly into the environment, without it being burned.

However, locals said the cold-venting was rarely mentioned at all at meetings held between SEPIL and the local community, and the majority of the people did not even know what it was. Anthony Irwin claimed documentation produced by SEPIL proving they had conducted a consultation process was an “insult to the intelligence” of the people. Micheal O Sheighin pointed out to Ms McLaverty that the main concern for the people was not the visual impact of the flare tower but the emissions from the burning gas.
