Irish Times: Corrib pipeline representations at Shell AGM: What the shareholders thought of it all

Published: May 16, 2007

A former Shell employee (executive secretary) of 37 years who did not want to be identified but is a registered shareholder said: “Jobs are very important and Shell is a huge employer all over the world. It will bring hundreds of jobs to Ireland. But people should never have to move their homes because of a project.”

Female shareholder: “I thought it very sad that a community can be so divided; I have never been to Ireland but I hear it’s a lovely country. The Irishman who went to jail made me feel a little ashamed as a shareholder.”

M de Vries: “People should be glad that they are getting gas. It did a lot for Holland, there were environmental concerns here too at the start but it was alright. Ireland’s dependence for gas will be reduced abroad; the Irish should be pleased with Shell for discovering it.”

Male shareholder (retired businessman): “There will always be for and against. It seems Shell are doing their best to put things right now but they should have listened to the local people and respected their opinions more.”

Male shareholder from Germany: “I only have a few shares but I like to come to this agm. I heard a lot from the board of directors and executives but if that was Germany everything would be recorded. Then they could be held accountable by a judge [ for] everything they said.”
