Irish Independent: Fed up with Shell to Sea

Published: May 23, 2007

I have followed with interest your coverage of the Corrib Gas project. A member of the Shell to Sea group campaign is quoted as follows: “It’s time that Shell copped on that the people of Erris are not behind them.”

Be that as it may be, but who is behind Shell to Sea?

I am not aware that Shell to Sea have asked local people from communities in Rossport, Ballinaboy or any other community around here for consent to let Shell to Sea claim to speak and act on our behalf.

I certainly do not approve of their actions and told them that they do not speak on my behalf, which they ignore.

I take issue with journalists reporting that: “The terms of Advantica were deemed too narrow, while Peter Cassells failed to deliver a breakthrough.”

Facts are that only Shell to Sea demanded that the terms were too narrow.

The Rossport 5 demanded that mediator Peter Cassells speaks only to them and Shell to Sea but to no other local people or anybody else for that matter, Shell to Sea refused to participate in the mediation and in the Advantica consultation, as they have refused to take part in the RPS/Shell local consultation workshop to discuss the upstream gas pipeline.

The report on the workshop will be published shortly.

Individuals should not make unsubstantiated claims to speak on behalf of communities.

Just because some group shouts loudest does not justify distortion of facts.

It is somewhat ironic that people who are not part of this local community are now demanding to be consulted and make decisions on our behalf.

How arrogant is that? Democratic behaviour? I would think not.
