NIGERIAN TRIBUNE: Negative reports scare investors from N/Delta – Shell

Sylvester Idowu, Warri – 28.05.2007

SHELL Petroleum Development Company (SPDC) has said that the negative reporting of the Niger Delta had scared many investors away from the region thereby causing acute unemployment and stunted development.

The Corporate Government Relations Manager, SPDC West, Mr Harriman Oyofo, made the observation at the weekend in Effurun, Delta State, during a two-day business meeting organised for media executives from Warri and Yenagoa.

He appealed to the media to assist in creating an enabling environment for the development of the Niger Delta, noting that the media could do this by reporting events devoid of sensationalism and bias.

Mr Oyofo said journalists should make the profession proud by reporting responsibly and not delve more on what could stall the development of any segment of the nation.

According to him, “I’m not saying that you should not report things as they are. What I’m saying is that you investigate very well your news source and every press release.

“We must report what needs to be reported and glamourise what needs to be glamourised; balance our reports, tell complete story and play down those things that destroy us.”

The General Manager of the Delta Broadcasting Service (DBS), Warri, Mr Willy Sowho, thanked the SPDC for creating such a forum to better the region’s reportage.
