Interactive Investor: What’s all the fuss about?

By LK Hyman

The media seem to have gone totally doolally over David Greer’s e-mail to his Sakhalin pipeliners. I thought that it was rather harmless in the compendium of damn stupid and pointless motivational messages from management which Shell tended to churn out regularly in the days of yore when I was on the payroll.

Everyone seems to have missed the important message (as usual) which the e-mail effectively sent out to Shell shareholders, and that is that it is still the English speakers and the Shell guys who are making this project work, not Boris and his Cossack chums. Greer didn’t send it out in Russian, did he? It wasn’t Gazprom who were exhorting the drones to pull their fingers out. So all is still well in the grand scheme of things.

It is truly heartwarming to think of all those English pipeliners togged up in orange Shell overalls and hard hats demonstrating their pipe welding skills while the Russian Gazpromenaders stamp around in their Ugg boots and fur hats trying to look as if they understand how it all works.

And that’s just the easy pipeline part! You can imagine the furrowed look of puzzlement on their sturdy moujik faces when they have to trudge into the LNG plant with all its complex bits of Lego kit and try to understand how it all works.

Thank you, David Greer I say, for reminding us that the difficult stuff is done by the Shell people.
