A leading member of the Shell to Sea campaign was remanded on continuing bail when he appeared at Belmullet District Court yesterday on assault, public order and obstruction charges.
One of the charges against John Monaghan, Rossport, Co Mayo, relates to an alleged incident involving a garda in a polling booth at Rossport National School on polling day, May 24th. Judge Mary Devins adjourned all matters against Mr Monaghan to the July sitting of the court.
Also yesterday, the judge indicated she was seeking submissions from both the prosecution and the defence in relation to points of law that had arisen in the case of three north Mayo men – Patrick O’Donnell, Porturlin Shore, Ballina; his son, Jonathan, Porturlin Shore; and Enda Carey, Porturlin Shore. They deny charges of assaulting a garda sergeant at the Bellanaboy gas terminal on October 12th.
Evidence from the defence and the prosecution has already been heard. After indicating she was inviting submissions on certain points of law, the judge adjourned the matter until July 11th.
