Brandon Sun (Canada): Shell gets province’s OK to do environmental assessment on proposed refinery

Canadian Press

TORONTO (CP) – The Ontario government has given the go-ahead for Shell Canada’s environmental assessment of its proposed new refinery near Sarnia, Ont.

Environment Minister Laurel Broten announced Wednesday that she has approved the oil company’s plan for identifying the refinery’s impact on the environment. “The terms of reference is just the first step in the environmental assessment process, which Shell has volunteered to undertake,” Broten said in a statement.

She added that the environmental assessment “will inform us if the refinery can be designed and constructed in a manner that respects the environment.”

Shell has an option to buy about 2,400 hectares of land in Lambton County in southwestern Ontario, near its current refinery, which processes 65,000 barrels per day of crude oil, and employs about 290 workers.

The projected capacity of the new refinery would be 150,000 to 250,000 barrels per day.

Shell has set aside $50 million for the study this year. The company also has a team of 40 staff in place, and has set up an office in Sarnia.
