New Straits Times: (Malaysia): Shell backs govt move on stations

KUALA LUMPUR: Shell Trading Malaysia has come out in support of the government’s directive forbidding petrol station operators from shortening their operating hours.

The trading arm of Shell Malaysia broke its silence since the issue first surfaced and said it would support whatever directive was issued by the government on the matter.

Its managing director, Datuk Mohzani Abdul Wahab, said the 830 Shell dealers nationwide were expected to continue business as usual.

Half the dealers operate 24-hour petrol stations.

Mohzani also disputed the claims by the Petrol Dealers Association of Malaysia that the operating hours were not stated in their licences.

He said minimum business hours were stipulated in the contracts.

“We expect them to continue business as usual and to honour their contractual obligations,” Mohzani said after launching the new look for Shell petrol stations yesterday.

The association had come under heavy fire for wanting to operate from 7am to 10pm.

The government had warned dealers that they faced having their petrol stations shut down and risked losing their licences.

Mohzani also made an interesting point when he said: “If being a petrol dealer is really unprofitable business, why do we still get thousands of applications for dealerships every year?”
