The Tide Online (Nigeria): Communities: Commissioner charges Shell on economic empowerment

The commissioner for Chieftaincy and Community Affairs, Hon. Ikalama T. Awongo has charged the management of the Shell Petroleum Development Company of Nigeria (SPDC) to evolve policies and programmes that would bring economic empowerment to the people of their host communities.

Ikalama said this during a meeting with representatives of the company on the proposed truckline project.

Ikalama who urged the company to assist the state government in the resuscitating of Craft Development Centres, also stressed the need for the company to take the issue of unemployment seriously especially in its host communities.

The commissioner assured the company that government would provide the enabling environment for its operation, while the crisis in Kula Community in the Akuku-Toru Local Government Area would soon be resolved.

According to him, once the crisis is over, the truckline project will go on without any disruption.

Ikalama, however commended the management of SPDC for steps taken so far to bring about rapid transformation across the state while further assuring that, the ministry would embark on sensitisation programme to enlighten the people on the need to support Shell projects especially the truckline project.

In their separate speeches, Mr. Emmanuel Etomi, Manager, Sustainable Development and the Coordinator Community Affairs, Tony Lawrence had briefed the commissioner on formation of the Community Trust and Cluster Development Board, noting that the board was formed to effect development in their host communities in terms of project executions.

The representatives of the company also reiterated the determination of SPDC to set up skills acquisition centres to help youths acquire the necessary skills for economic empowerment.
