GUNMEN, Wednesday night abducted the two-year-old daughter of a Nigerian Shell worker from the NNPC staff quarters at Akpajo, near Port Harcourt. Moments after the abduction, the gunmen demanded a ransom of N5 million.

However, the State Security Service (SSS) yesterday arraigned one Prince Amadu and others said to be at large at a Magistrate Court, Port Harcourt for alleged kidnap and unlawful imprisonment.

Police spokesman in Rivers State, Mrs. Baresua Ireju said preliminary investigation on yesterday’s abduction revealed that the gunmen were robbers.

Sources in the neighborhood said the gunmen, about 15 of them stormed the area at about 10.00 p.m., raiding from house to house. It was gathered that before they could reach the apartment where the little girl lives with her parents, the father, Anibosa Usman had fled, thinking they were coming for him.

Apparently angered by the situation, the gunmen resolved to take the girl hostage. The Police PRO said the kidnappers had established contact with the parents and were demanding N5 million ransom.

The JTF Spokesman and Army PRO in the state, Major Sagir Musa said the mother of the girl was in the 2 Amphibious Brigade to narrate what transpired. He said, according to the mother, the kidnappers had instructed that the ransom be paid by 10.00 a.m. yesterday. He said they had transferred the matter to the SSS in the state.

Vanguard gathered that the Police responded quite late to the distress call from residents of the quarter. “Though the Police came at last, but they did late. The robbers had left before they arrived,” said a resident.

Meanwhile, the SSS yesterday arraigned one Prince Amadi (31) and others said to be at large at the Magistrate Court 3 in Port Harcourt for alleged kidnap and unlawful imprisonment of one Philip Osuji working with Afribank.

The two-count charge reads in parts: “That you, Prince Amadi (m) 31-year-old and others now at large on 31st day of August at Chlolak Avenue, Ogbogoro, Rivers State in the Port Harcourt Magisterial District conspired to unlawfully imprison one Philip Osuji working with Afribank Plc in such a manner as to prevent any person entitled to have access to him from discovering the place where he is imprisoned and thereby committed an offence contrary to and punishable under section 516 of the Criminal Code Act, Cap C38 Laws of the Federation of Nigeria 2004.”

“That you, Prince Amadi unlawfully imprisoned and kidnapped one Philip Osuji working with Afribank in such a manner as to prevent any person entitled to have access to him from discovering the place where he was imprisoned and thereby committed an offence contrary to and punishable under section 364 (2) of the Criminal Code Act Cap C38 Laws of the Federation of Nigeria 2004.”

The suspect later pleaded not guilty to the charges. In his ruling, the Chief Magistrate L. G. Adookor adjourned the matter to September 20th.

According to community sources, it was the arrest of the accused that allegedly provoked the recent mayhem in Ogbogoro community that claimed several lives, including that of three chiefs.
