The umbrella organization of Ogoni people MOSOP has accused the Anglo-Dutch oil giant, Shell of paying huge sums of money to local cultists and chiefs to advance their operations in Ogoni Land.

MOSOP in a statement in Port Harcourt on Tuesday said Shell organized a meeting last week, where the cultists were paid and instructed to frustrate any attempt to stop its planned destruction of oil wells in Ogoni communities, particularly in Kegbara Dere.

To strengthen the arrangement, MOSOP said, SPDC facilitated the release from detention of some notorious people who had been responsible for pipeline vandalization in Ogoni and who were recently arrested by Kegbara Dere Community in Gokana local Government Area and handed over to the police.

MOSOP said that since Thursday, October 11, Shell has been making incursions into Kegbara Dere community in an attempt to execute the said project. “As in previous cases, the development has generated serious disaffection and tension in the community and may explode any moment”,the organization warned.

MOSOP stated that for sometime now, Ogoni have had relative peace but that Shell activities may truncate that peace. “The result we foresee is that peace and stability of the area would be compromised. Ogoni needs peace and Shell must allow us reap the benefits of peace” it said.

It reminded Shell that its social license in Ogoni has expired. “Her stock completely collapsed on the Ogoni market when on May 14, 2006, at Bori, the Ogoni people in a welcome address to former President Obasanjo unanimously reaffirmed their position that Shell should go”, it said.

MOSOP therefore called on the government and all lovers of peace and men of goodwill to prevail on Shell to leave Ogoni alone. “SPDC should be held responsible for any breakdown of law and order in Ogoni, especially kegbara Dere”, it further warned.
