Netherland Ambassador to Nigeria, Arie van der Wiel, has said that the level of security in the Niger Delta is the major impediment to his country’s attempt to provide social amnenities in the area.
According to him, militants activities make it difficult to embark on infrastructural and different development works in the area, rather, his country gives frequent travel warnings concerning the zone where Royal Dutch Shell carry out its activities.
Speaking during a courtesy visit to THISDAY yesterday, the envoy also said the volume of trade with Nigeria is low at present, but said the country remains the largest trading partner with his country in Africa.
According to him, despite the low trade, his country comes behind China and United States, pointing out that Netherlands exports petroleum products to Nigeria.
He said Nigeria is the highest beneficiary of Dutch aids through Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) which stand at EU2 billion.
Many of the investments, he said, are by private sector investors citing examples like Unilever, Nigeria Breweries, Shell Petroleum and KLM Airlines.
He said his country has a strong presence in the shipping subsector of the economy adding that more cooperation would come on the area of agriculture.
“There are cassava processing projects done by Dutch private companies in Benue, Taraba and Niger states. Cassava has secrets in terms of potentials, there is big future for it and Nigeria is by far the biggest producer in Africa,” he said.
