Western People (Ireland): Environmental probe into drilling damage in Erris

By: Orla Hearns

A DEPARTMENT of the Environment representative travelled to Glenamoy last week to ascertain what damage, if any, may have been caused by the consultants to Shell E&P Ireland (SEPIL), RPS.

An investigation has been instigated by the Department of Environment and Local Government following revelations that RPS, who were hired by Shell to identify alternative route options for the high pressure onshore pipeline to the proposed gas refinery at Bellanaboy, drilled bore holes in the Glen-amoy bog complex which is an area of special conservation.

A spokesperson at the Department of the Environment told the Western People that the penalties for the unauthorised drilling would depend on the severity of any damages caused.

The drilling took place at the former site of the Rossport Solidarity Camp in Glengad. A court ordered the camp be dismantled, given the sensitive nature of the area.

RPS issued the following state-ment in relation to the incident: “Over the past weeks RPS has been carrying out site investigation works in and around the short-listed corridors. These works consist of drilling a number of boreholes to obtain geotechnical information. The data which these investigations provide will assist in the selection of an onshore pipeline route for the Corrib Gas project. This work is taking place with the permission of the relevant landowners. By Tuesday (October 23rd) two boreholes had been drilled in the Glenamoy Bog Complex SAC (Special Area of Conservation) within an area of improved and semi-improved grassland.
