CALGARY — Long-time Shell Canada Ltd. employee Dave Collyer is the new leader of Royal Dutch Shell PLC in Canada, replacing Adrian Loader, who is retiring at the end of the month.

Mr. Collyer, 52, who holds a petroleum engineering degree and an MBA from the University of Alberta, is the first Canadian in 15 years to lead Shell’s 5,000-staff Canadian unit.

As part of Shell Canada’s integration into the Anglo/Dutch oil multi-national, Mr. Collyer’s title and responsibilities are different from those of his predecessors.

Starting Jan. 1, he will be Shell’s country chair for Canada, reporting to Rob Routs, one of six members of Shell’s executive committee. Mr. Routs is also in charge of the global downstream business.

Mr. Collyer will represent the Canadian operation at the corporate level on cross-business issues such as media and public relations, human resources policies and emergency response.

But he will not run the day-to-day operations of Shell Canada, which are now part of a vertical structure with three major business units — exploration and production, gas and power and oil products and chemicals — run from Shell’s headquarters in The Hague. Brian Straub, executive vice-president for oilsands, continues to hold the top operating job in the country. He also reports to Mr. Routs.

Mr. Collyer’s appointment, announced internally and effective Jan. 1, concludes the reorganization of Shell Canada following its parent’s $8.7-billion buyout early this year of the 22% of Shell Canada it didn’t own.

Under the previous structure, Shell Canada had a president and CEO based in Calgary who ran the company as a relatively independent entity from the group, even though most leaders tended to be non-Canadians picked by the parent and its board was controlled by the parent. Shell Canada’s last Canadian leaders were Jack MacLeod, who was president from 1985 to 1993, and Bill Daniel, president from 1974 and 1985.

Mr. Collyer will hold dual responsibility as vice-president of health, safety and sustainable development for oilsands, a job he started in September.
