Spill timeline:
1988 — 100,000 gallons of gasoline spilled from Shell pipeline underground near Limestone School, some spreading for at least a mile underground by 2002.
Feb. 25 1994 — First story breaks of contamination of local well water with MTBE, a cancer-causing gasoline additive.
March 1994 — Shell assumes cost of providing pure water to residents of leak area.
June 30, 1997 — Lawsuit filed against Shell by the State of Illinois and County of Kankakee
July 15, 1997 — More contamination found in wells.
December 2001 — Lawsuit filed on behalf of Edith Quick. Becomes class action suit.
February 2002 — Toxins spread to Wiley Creek, 14 years after spill.
May 6, 2002 — Real estate appraiser estimates property values dropped 14-16 percent due to water contamination.
October 2005 — Attorney General Lisa Madigan sues Shell. Company pays about $400,000 for dumping contaminated soil from Limestone cleanup in Kane County.
Wednesday — Suit settled for $46 millions
