marketwire: Shell ‘Dump’ UK Offshore Workers After Declaring Obscene Profits

LONDON, UNITED KINGDOM–(Marketwire – Jan. 31, 2008) –

Shell today are expected to declare 2007 profits in the 13 billion pound range and at the same time “dump” the loyal offshore workforce that helped it deliver these very profits. Unite, the largest offshore union, are outraged at Shell’s approach to safety and industrial relations in the North Sea, at a time when they continue to deliver record profits.

A complaint by offshore unions last year was upheld by the Health & Safety Executive which expressed concern of the amount of stress and fatigue amongst staff on Shell’s offshore installations.

Shell announced last week that they have “negotiated a transfer deal with staff on the installations for sale in the Dutch Sector” they then go on to state that they are “not prepared to negotiate with its UK staff, who are similarly affected by the sale of assets in the UK”.

Graham Tran, Unite Regional officer, stated “Shell and their shareholders should hang their heads in shame. They are prepared to line their own pockets at the expense of the safety and loyalty of the offshore workforce. Our members believe they are being discriminated against for being UK citizens. Why should Shell negotiate with Dutch personnel and not afford the same facility to the UK staff?”

Mr Tran will, this week, write to Shell’s Chief Executive, Jeroen van der Veer requesting an urgent meeting to discuss the unacceptable behaviour of some of his managers in Aberdeen and to seek equal treatment for UK workers.
