Irish Times: Gardai investigate Bellanaboy fire

23/02/2008  09:22

Gardaí are investigating the cause of a fire which damaged equipment belonging to the Shell group near the controversial Bellanaboy gas terminal.

The fire broke out at a compound used by contractors used by Shell. It is understood timber and a number of plastic pipes used in the construction of the site were damaged in the fire.

The company claimed that the fire appears not to have been accidental and in a statement released to the press, said it deplored the ‘malicious damage’ which had been caused.

The fire was brought under control by three units of the local fire brigade shortly before midnight.

The scene has been preserved by gardaí and a forensic examination will be held later today.
