MUSCAT — The Shell Representative Office (SRO) has been rechristened Shell Development Oman LLC with Limited Liability Company status. The new identity is given in view of the company’s decision to bring its varied range of activities under a single corporate umbrella. The decision comes into force with immediate effect.

A press conference to announce the decision was held at the SRO premises yesterday, in the presence of Hilal bin Yahya Al Mawali, external affairs manager, Shell Development, Oman, Andrew Wood, Shell country chairman in Oman and Erik Nidjan, shareholders’ adviser in Oman.

Speaking on the occasion, Andrew Wood said: “The dedicated Shell office, opened in 2002, provides a central point for the coordination of all Shell’s activities and interests in the Sultanate. The broad range of activities undertaken by our office, from social investment through learning and technology sharing, now exceeds the limit of a representative office. We are therefore delighted to announce that as of now we will be known as Shell Development Oman LLC.”

In accordance with this new identity, a new office building is also under construction close to Khoula Hospital, near the PDO gate.

Speaking about the new building, Erik Nidjan said: “The small office here right now is not enough to house present employees. So a new office, ideally located for the company’s varied activities, is coming up. The new building will be equipped with state-of-the-art IT infrastructure, ample space for car parking at the basement, and will have energy efficient systems and environment-friendly installations in place. The new office building will reflect the range of activities and initiatives that Shell stands for. Through the new corporate status, the company aims to demonstrate to its stakeholders and the Omani public, that it remains fully committed to the long-term development of the Sultanate.”

Shell’s partnership with the people of Oman dates back to almost 70 years and together with their partners in Petroleum Development Oman, Oman LNG, Qalhat LNG and Shell Oman Marketing, they have built world class, successful ventures creating wealth and prosperity for the nation.

Shell is also committed to supporting the government and the people of Oman through sustainable social investment initiatives. Over the past few years, training and education of young Omanis has been their key theme. In collaboration with the Ministry of Manpower, the company has initiated specifically designed education-for-employment programmes that enable young Omanis to be employed in various sectors of industry.

The Shell Professional Training Programme is another initiative, and aims to share Shell’s knowledge and experience that it attains, through international operations with Omanis.

In addition to these training-for-employment schemes, Shell has launched a number of initiatives with the support of the government and NGOs. The Shell Road Safety Awards, Road Safety Curriculum and Road Safety Traffic Park are projects that have been developed in collaboration with the Ministry of Education and the Royal Oman Police.

The company has also sponsored a ‘Shell Chair’ at Sultan Qaboos University for Carbonate Geosciences Studies. The Chair will play a leading role in developing an internationally recognised research and training programme in Carbonate Geosciences at SQU.

The Intilaaqah programme, set up by the company in 1995, is a social investment initiative designed to stimulate and encourage unemployed Omani youth to consider starting their own business as a career option. By supporting their business ideas and plans with free expert training and counselling, Intilaaqah aims to create young entrepreneurs who will help diversify the economy. Since its inception, this programme has trained more than 5,000 Omanis, many of whom now successfully run their own businesses. Others have managed to find jobs or gone on for further studies at colleges and universities. To encourage these students, the Intilaaqah Best Young Entrepreneur Awards event is held by the company every year. In fact, the success of the Intilaaqah programme in Oman has been a major incentive for the company to set up similar programmes in countries like Abu Dhabi, Egypt, Qatar, Syria and Libya.

Last year alone, the company spent as much as $170 million on social investment projects.
