Every two years, a new winner is chosen by The Millennium Technology Foundation from candidates from top universities and corporations around the world. The first recipient was Sir Tim Berners-Lee, creator of the World Wide Web. In 2006, the Millennium Prize was awarded to Californian Shuji Nakamura, inventor of efficient lighting technology.

Each finalist will receive a prize in Helsinki on June 11. The total awards equal $1.8 million US dollars. This is the world’s largest award for technology innovation.

The Foundation is funded by the government of Finland and Finnish institutions and businesses.
