ABOUT THE PRIZE:
The Millennium Prize was created in 2004 to promote “technological research and innovation that have a positive impact on the quality of life; alleviate fears towards technological change and encourage discussion between technology specialists and societal decision makers.”
Every two years, a new winner is chosen by The Millennium Technology Foundation from candidates from top universities and corporations around the world. The first recipient was Sir Tim Berners-Lee, creator of the World Wide Web. In 2006, the Millennium Prize was awarded to Californian Shuji Nakamura, inventor of efficient lighting technology.
Each finalist will receive a prize in Helsinki on June 11. The total awards equal $1.8 million US dollars. This is the world’s largest award for technology innovation.
The Foundation is funded by the government of Finland and Finnish institutions and businesses.
