upstreamonline.com: Floating LNG on menu at Prelude
By Russell Searancke
Shell’s Prelude gas field off north-west Australia could be the location of the world’s first floating liquefied natural gas (FLNG) production and storage vessel, said Shell’s executive director of gas and power Linda Cook.
Cook told the APPEA conference in Perth, Australia, that FLNG had the potential to develop stranded gas fields at lower development costs.
“It’s still early days (on Prelude) but we’re excited about its potential for Australia,” said Cook.
Shell confirmed recently that it intends to invite bids in the coming months for a landmark front-end engineering and design contract on Shell’s planned generic FLNG unit.
The company has for years been pushing the merits of the untried FLNG concept.
It had suggested FLNG as a suitable option to develop the Woodside Petroleum-operated Sunrise project a few years ago.
Shell said last month its 100%-owned Prelude field in the remote Browse basin contains 2 trillion cubic feet to 3 Tcf of recoverable gas.
This lifted Shell’s discovered resources in the Browse basin alone to 9 Tcf, and include its ownership of the growing Crux field reserves.
