More than 2,000 representatives of the worldwide oil and gas industry are in the West Australian city of Perth for the annual Australian Petroleum Production and Exploration Association (APPE) meeting.

The annual conference is the largest of its kind in the southern hemisphere, and the organisers say this year the main priorty will be energy security and reducing the impact of greenhouse gas emissions.

Addressing Australia’s current skills shortage will also be on the agenda.

The conference will be attended by Royal Dutch Shell executive director for gas and power Linda Cook, BHP Billiton Petroleum president Michael Yeager, and Jim Slutz, of the US energy department.

The APPE says it expects world energy demand to increase by 40 per cent by 2030.

Chief executive Belinda Robinson says the industry needs to find ways to meet the growing demand while still achieving emissions reductions.

“If we can triple our LNG production on the basis that most of that goes to the Asia Pacific region we will be helping the Asia Pacific region reduce its greenhouse footprint,” she said.

“So even though the production of LNG is quite an emission-intensive process, by Australia producing LNG we are helping the rest of the world achieve its ambitions in relation to greenhouse.”

Ms Robinson says the conference will discuss ways of attracting new sectors of the community into the industry.

“Indigenous people, older people who have left the industry, we’ll be looking at how we can entice them back, particularly to play mentor roles for the younger people,” she said.

“We’re (also) undereprestented by women in this industry, so we’ll be looking at all possible ways that we can increase the size of the pool.”
