Bloomberg: Shell Shuts Tennessee Oil Pipeline After Leak, Fire Chief Says

By Dan Hart

April 12 (Bloomberg) — Royal Dutch Shell Plc has shut a pipeline that moves oil from the company’s offshore rigs in the Gulf of Mexico to its terminus near St. Louis after a leak was found in Tennessee, said Dyer County Fire Chief James Medling.

The leak, which amounted to about 10 gallons (37 liters) of oil, was discovered yesterday afternoon on the north side of State Highway 104, Medling said in a telephone interview. He said Shell was taking care of the cleanup and repairs of the pipeline.

The spill occurred near Dyersburg, which is about 160 miles (257 kilometers) west of Nashville, according to the Dyersburg Chamber of Commerce Web site.

Shell didn’t immediately respond to a message left by Bloomberg News seeking comment.

The leak was first reported by the State Gazette of Dyersburg. The newspaper said the pipeline was laid in 1963, and was the largest diameter pipeline at 40 inches (101 centimeters) until the 48-inch Alaska pipeline was built in the 1970s.
