LAGOS, April 12 (Reuters) – Youths in Nigeria’s Niger Delta ended a protest occupation of a 5,000 barrels per day (bpd) oil facility operated by a Royal Dutch Shell (RDSa.L: Quote, Profile, Research) joint venture, and the unit’s production resumed on Saturday, the company said.

Youths from the local Gbaran community unhappy over the handling of development projects which Shell was helping to fund had invaded the small, unmanned Etelebou flow station late on Thursday, shutting off its production. Shell has a 30 percent share of the facility’s output.

The protesters ended their occupation following talks to resolve the dispute.

“The youths have left the facility and production resumed again today,” Caroline Wittgen, spokeswoman for the Shell Petroleum Development Company of Nigeria, told Reuters.

Disputes between local communities and oil multinationals producing Nigeria’s over two million barrels of oil per day are common in the Niger Delta, a vast impoverished region that is home to Africa’s biggest hydro-carbon industry.
