Corrib campaigners dismiss new pipe route

RTE News: Corrib campaigners dismiss new pipe route

Thursday, 17 April 2008 20:23

A group campaigning against plans to bring fuel from the Corrib gas field to a refinery in Co Mayo has dismissed the announcement of a new route for the pipeline.

Shell Ireland has announced a modified route for the onshore section of the pipeline which it says takes local concerns into account.

Shell E&P Ireland says the new route is twice as far from occupied houses in the Rossport area of Co Mayo than the originally approved route.

AdvertisementThe company says it also plans to limit the pressure in the pipeline to less than half of what was originally intended.

Shell says the recommendations in a report, drawn up by an independent mediator, informed the selection of the proposed new route and that it has listened closely to the local community since five locals were jailed for their opposition to the development in 2005.

But this afternoon, the Shell to Sea group has dismissed the latest proposals as nothing more than ‘a cosmetic exercise’.

It says that altering the route of the gas pipeline does not change the fact that fuel from the Corrib gas field will be refined on land and will have to be piped through the area.

The group is also sceptical about planned reductions in the pressure of the pipeline, saying Shell has not demonstrated to locals exactly how it will achieve this.
