oilandgasnewsonline.com: Shell restarts Calpine pipeline

NEW YORK:

Oil major Royal Dutch Shell restarted the giant Capline crude oil pipeline after completing repairs on a small leak, the company said in a statement.

Shell shut the 1.14 million barrels per day capacity line after a worker discovered a crack that resulted in approximately 10 gallons of oil being spilled.

“The Capline crude oil pipeline restarted this morning and is making shipments,” an e-mailed statement from Shell said.

“Response personnel will continue to follow structured procedures for increasing volume, monitoring and remediating to safely bring the system back to full operational status over the next few days.”

US oil traders expected the temporary shutdown of the pipeline to have little effect on the oil market as the line was running well below capacity at the time.

“Capline is saying they may be able to accelerate rates a bit to try to partially mitigate the lost time,” said a trader at a company that uses the Capline to supply one of its refineries.

Traders estimated the 667-mile (1,073 km) Capline could have been running at up to 500,000 barrels per day below its rated capacity.
