Talks Collapse As Oil Strike Looms But ..

Thursday 24 April 2008

OIL giants Shell yesterday announced the axing of 300 Scots jobs despite record profits.

Shocked staff were given the news after arriving for work at the firm’s Tullos and Rubislaw offices in Aberdeen.

Shell say the cuts in their 2500- strong onshore workforce are needed to secure their long-term future in the North Sea.

They have already cancelled plans for a new £25million research centre in the city.

Union leaders accused Shell of being too greedy and trying to cash in on rising oil prices.

They also claimed it was the start of the firm pulling out of Aberdeen and moving to the Netherlands.

Over the next three years, Shell expect around 120 jobs to go through natural wastage or voluntary redundancy. But they admit another 180 office staff face compulsory redundancy.

The cuts come after a costs review by Shell, who made record profits of almost £14billion last year.

The firm claimed that offshore costs have rocketed by almost 60 per cent and cuts were needed to stay competitive.

Vice president technical John Gallagher said: “The organisational changes will better position Shell to focus on our strengths.”

But Graham Tran, of the Amicus section of Unite union, said: “The firm are basing these cuts on costs and yet it is making £1.5million profit a minute – how greedy can you get?

“This is just the start. We believe Shell intend to pull out of Aberdeen and move lock, stock and barrel to the Hague.”
