Militants in Nigeria attacked Royal Dutch Shell facilities in southern Delta over the weekend, leading to another cut in output.

Security sources said the attack was by an armed gang led by a “Commander Douglas”. A Shell spokesman said: “A few oil delivery lines are affected and some oil has spilt into the environment.”

Shell has had to cut its 1m barrels-per-day production by a quarter in the past two years because of attacks on its facilities by the Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta (Mend). Local and expatriate workers have been kidnapped.

However, in an emailed statement yesterday, Mend said it was considering a temporary ceasefire after an appeal by US presidential candidate Barack Obama for the attacks to stop.
