Time to reassess Shell gas pipeline
Monday May 19 2008
It is sad that Shell will not listen to the Erris community.
The suggested compromise by Vincent McGrath and others that the refinery could be acceptable if relocated to a remote part of the coast was perfectly reasonable and is something that Shell themselves should have come up with when they first arrived in the region.
Bellanaboy is clearly not a suitable location for a refinery — this was said years ago by An Bord Pleanala, but the government chose to ignore it.
The notion of piping raw gas nine kilometres inland was always fundamentally stupid.
It is now up to our new Government to take heed of the concerns of the public and insist on a complete reassessment.
