A Linden resident who says she contracted a rare form of stomach cancer as a result of conditions at the Bayway Refinery in Linden last week won a $7.5 million lawsuit against ExxonMobil Corp., according to her attorneys. They said that Bonnie Anderson was for decades unknowingly exposed to “take-home” asbestos fibers as she washed work clothes worn by her husband, John. He was employed as a process operator at the refinery, which ExxonMobil formerly owned.John P. Guinan, an associate at the New York City law firm Levy Phillips & Konigsberg LLP, said a Middlesex County Superior Court jury last year found ExxonMobil responsible for the cancer called “peritoneal mesothelioma.” A second trial, focusing on damages, began two weeks ago and resulted in last week’s verdict. Also representing Anderson in the case was Moshe Maimon, a partner in the Levy Phillips firm.

Prem Nair, an ExxonMobil spokeswoman in Fairfax, Va., said, “We sympathize with the Andersons, but we operate our businesses with meticulous attention to the health and safety of our employees and others. We are considering our post-trial options, including an appeal.”
