SHELL OIL’S EXIT FROM OGONILAND & CALL FOR NEW OIL FIRM? 

June 12, 2008 

The attention of the National Union of Ogoni Students, (NUOS Intl.), USA is drawn to a statement credited to Nigeria’s President, Alhaji Musa Yar -Adua in Cape Town, South Africa on the exit of Shell Oil and his call for a new company to start drilling oil in Ogoniland by the end of 2008. In an emergency conference on June 09, 2008, the following resolutions were reached: 

 1. We welcome the President’s gesture for Shell Oil to pull out of Ogoniland. The Ogoni People have since 1993 declared the company personal non-grata in Ogoni. We demand of Shell Oil to begin cleaning the Ogoni environment of the pollution it created during its four decades of oil exploration in Ogoni. The company must also pay reparation to the Ogoni people. 

2. The stipulated time frame for a new oil firm to begin oil extraction from Ogoni is rather short. Shell Oil must excavate its corrugated pipelines from Ogoni; Shell must defend itself in a class-action lawsuit instituted in the United States of America by Ogoni students; Environmental & Social Impact Assessment Studies must be conducted and results agreed upon by interest parties before oil extraction can begin; Ogoni stake holders around the world will discuss and agree on fair terms of agreement for a prospective company.  

3. We demand an unconditional exoneration of Ken Saro-Wiwa and other Ogoni heroes from the criminal records of Nigeria. Absolvement from crime that was not committed is just. 

4. We demand for the creation of Ogoni State from the Federal Government of Nigeria. Ogoni is viable and endowed with resources that have fended for other areas. Ogoni resources must be used in the development of Ogoni and its people. This demand is non-negotiable. 

5. We stand by the demands made in the Ogoni Bill of Rights. We call on all Nigerians, the Federal Government, and interest parties to find time to study this document. 

6. The call for the repeal of decree 2 (the land use act) – a dictatorial law that gives our resources to the government and nothing in return to the landlords. An amendment to all related sections of the constitution is necessary. 

7. We call on the Rivers State & Federal Governments to rehabilitate displaced Ogonis at Ban Goi, Keenwigbara, Kpean, Kaa, Oloko and other Ogoni villages razed down by the military between 1993 – 1996. Educational trust funds should be established for the orphans in these villages and other deserving Ogoni students. 

8. It is of note that certain persons have imposed their will on our people; we reject this and dissociate ourselves and our organization from Ledum Mitee who continue to disrespect the constitution of MOSOP and turn the Ogoni struggle into a political platform to influence positions and contracts for his family. The true MOSOP remains a grassroot movement working towards the survival of the Ogoni people. The true stake holders of the Ogoni people are the peasants that suffer the direct effect of oil exploration, not those who visit Ogoni only when there is something at stake. All negotiations on Ogoni will, and must involve the true stake holders. 

We use this medium to call on the Ogoni people to remain steadfast in our struggle. We must remain non-violent in our just demands and we must shun all back door negotiation. Our unborn generations will remember this historic moment when we make a conscious choice that is fair to all.
