Mitvol wins Order of the Broom Cupboard

Has that scourge of Western oil majors, Oleg Mitvol, finally been muzzled? The Rottweiler, head of one of Russia’s environment agencies, has been demoted. Russian news agencies were reporting yesterday that he has been moved to a smaller office, better than Siberia, but in terms of being frozen out, much the same effect.

Mitvol, who rose to prominence targeting the likes of Shell and ExxonMobil, never quite managed to shake off the suspicion that his actions were Kremlin-inspired. But maybe we were all wrong.

Having bullied Shell into handing over control of its Sakhalin-2 gas field, we thought his reward would be the Order of Lenin, not a broom cupboard.
