Japan’s Showa Shell to build solar cell plant – report

NEW YORK, July 1 (Reuters) – Japanese oil distributor Showa Shell Sekiyu KK <5002.T> plans to build one of the world’s biggest solar panel plants at a cost of more than 100 billion yen ($940 million), Wednesday’s online edition of Nihon Keizai Shimbun newspaper reported.
It said the plant, to be built in 2011, will have an annual capacity of 1,000 megawatts — bigger than Sharp Corp’s <6753.T> Katsuragi facility in Nara prefecture, which has annual capacity of 710MW.
Nikkei said the plant, which will produce solar cells made of copper and indium, could be built in Japan, but also Europe or the Middle East and the facility could be split into several locations.
